BA (MA) Theorie-Wahlpflichtübung: Law & Territory: perspectives on imperialism, sovereignty and property
Dienstag, 17.03.2026
What is the relation between law and territory? Does law stop at the edge of (a national) territory and how has it been used to either extend or limit territory? How does territory limit access to and authority of law? Can we observe a change in the meaning of sovereignty in relation to law and territory? This course seeks to provide answers to these questions by discussing anthropological approaches to law, which interrogate the spatial dimension of law and which relate to classical issues in political and anthropological theory such as sovereignty, borders, violence, and rights. In an effort to understand how contemporary sovereignty and forms of (neo)imperialism involve specific declinations of law and territory, as well as property in land, we will pay particular attention to state (dis)ordering, expansion and control. We will do this by studying issues such as land-grabbing, migration control, colonialism, and state induced destruction and displacement. The course is composed of 6 lectures from external guest lecturers who specialise in these questions (Ringvorlesung ‘Territory’), and 7 seminars in which we will read texts from the external speakers and develop the questions of the seminar further by connecting them to works of political anthropology.
